Battlefield 2142

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth’s population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

Battlefield 1942

In the multiplayer-focused Battlefield 1942, players are given the power and tools to affect the outcomes of key battles of WWII. With the ability to control over 35 authentic Axis and Allied vehicles from a first person perspective and select from five player classes, they are faced with incredible choices in their plan of action. Among a vast array of available options, players can choose to heroically storm or defend the beaches of Normandy, direct artillery or command a tank at Kursk, pilot a fighter or operate shore battery at Midway, command an aircraft carrier or jeep at Gaudalcanal, and take charge of a bomber or an APC in Tobruk – experiencing some of the most dramatic moments of WWII. The game will be available for the PC in summer 2002.

Battlefield 1942 will support up to 64 players and give them the ability to fully experience World War II combat. Playing as several infantry classes, gamers will also be able to control many weapons available to the Axis and Allies as well as command numerous land vehicles, ships and aircraft. With larger craft such as a bomber or battleship, the game will allow players to choose what stations they serve – pilot, gunner, bombardier, etc. Proper use and management of each vehicle will determine the success or failure of each battle.

Battlefield 1942 will also feature incredibly large and detailed maps – up to four kilometers — that allow players to strategize a variety of battle plans. The fighting in Battlefield 1942 takes place in the most famous and pivotal battles of the Second World War from Europe, Pacific, Eastern Europe and North Africa. Over 16 maps from these four theaters of WWII will be included. The game uses a proprietary engine named the Refractor 2, the most robust 3D rendering engine available and fully fleshes out the action.

Though multiplayer experience will be the focus of Battlefield 1942, there will be a mode of unique single player action. These levels feature advanced artificial intelligence with no scripting, meaning players will get a completely different experience each time they play:

  • Control over 35 authentic WWII vehicles ships and aircraft including tanks, fighters, bombers, jeeps and battleships from first person perspective.
  • Five different character classes – assault, medic, scout, anti-tank, engineer — with unique strengths and weaknesses.
  • 16 large and highly detailed maps from four WWII theaters that players must utilize to give the game strategic elements as well.
  • Proprietary Refractor 2 engine raises bar for graphics and 3D rendering.
  • Huge multiplayer component supporting up to 64 players that requires teamwork and cooperation from each member in order to achieve victory for the Axis or Allies.
  • Operate many hand weapons of war that were available to the Axis and Allies. Unique single player mode features no scripting, meaning the player will get a completely different experience each time they play.

From top secret, cutting edge weapons to secret forces and secret places, a new level of drama and excitement will be added to the Battlefield experience.

Many of the new vehicles and weapons featured in Secret Weapons—futuristic for the WWII timeframe—were considered extremely powerful yet experimental. While these armaments and vehicles are rooted in WWII history, many never saw actual combat, however, they are put to use in the game.

Secret Weapons lets gamers control and use new weapons and new vehicles in eight fresh WWII combat battlefields including, Telemark, Peenemüende (V2 research facility), Essen and The Eagle’s Nest (Hitler’s hideaway). Battlefield 2: Special Forces (2010/Multi12)

World War II died away and unlikely to be repeated again, because large-scale armed conflict today with the use of nuclear weapons will lead to the death of all mankind. In the XXI century appeared on the stage intelligence: a strictly undercover operations, pinpoint strikes, night raids and covert sabotage – are the main methods to combat the new era. Battlefield 2: Special Forces offers you a place in a special squad of the best in the world. You’ll be able to fight insurgents and terrorists in the Russian Spetsnaz, British SAS, U.S. “sea lions” and Brazilian MEC. Although no one bothers to hell with the law and lead the troops the rebels themselves!

Assassin’s Creed

You play as Altair, a member of the Hashshashin (or Assassins), a real-life group that performed politically-motivated murders between the 11th and 13th centuries. Set in the Middle East during the third crusade, Assassin’s Creed is steeped in historical fact. Each of the three main cities was well-researched and beautifully recreated. The nine men Altair is charged with dispatching did, in fact, all die or disappear around the time the game takes place. The attention paid to creating an accurate representation of Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus is commendable. Were it not for the «anomalies» that flitter around characters, you would have little reason to ever question that this is indeed what these cities and people looked like centuries ago.

Though Assassin’s Creed is an action game, the story plays a considerable role from start to finish. This is a story-heavy title, which proves a detriment in the long run. There is a major twist in the Assassin’s story, the kind that (if it hasn’t already been spoiled for you on the Internet) would likely blow the lid covering your brain. That is if this big twist were revealed towards the end of the story and not in the first five minutes. Ubisoft’s decision to introduce the only major surprise just a few minutes into Assassin’s Creed proves costly. Imagine if you were watching the Sixth Sense and ten minutes in the movie told you Bruce Willis is a ghost. It would deaden the remainder of the story. This is exactly what happens with Assassin’s. The moments with Altair are well-told and interesting (though perhaps a bit too drawn out), but every time the «twist» elements come into play, the entire game grinds to a halt. Over a 10- or 12-hour gaming experience, that becomes grating. So much so that all of the clever story elements begin to play against Assassin’s Creed rather than elevating it to high art as seems to have been the intention.

AMERICA’S ARMY

America’s Army: Operations may very well be one of the most ironic games ever. More than a few American politicians have bolstered their careers by condemning violence in popular entertainment, particularly in video games. Now the US government, by way of the Army, has produced a computer game that’s all about realistic, deadly combat. While this odd turn of events raises interesting ethical and political issues, many gamers probably just want to know one thing about this online shooter: Is it any good? The game was launched in a more limited form on July 4 of this year, but the launch was plagued by embarrassing problems, including bugs and too few official servers. Fortunately, the Army now seems to have gotten its act more or less together with this game. Now there are more servers, and America’s Army is generally more stable, which means you can more easily enjoy this exciting tactical shooter.
